Firestopping is required by building codes. It’s a term that describes materials used to prevent the spread of flames, heat or gases through penetrations in fire-rated:

• Walls
• Ceilings
• Floors

for:

• Electrical
• Mechanical
• Structural through-penetrations
• Un-penetrated openings (e.g. Openings for future use)
• Re-entries of existing firestop systems
• Control or sway joints
• Junctions
• Head-of-wall joints

A firestop system is a combination of products, either pre-manufactured or assembled in the field. They prevent passage of flames, heat or gases between compartments when they are installed per U.L. rated specifications. There are many types of firestop systems consisting of numerous product types. The type you may need is determined by the unique qualities of your location.
